Getting Divorced

If you are experiencing difficulties in your marriage, consider whether you can resolve those issues with the help of a trained relationship counsellor.

If this is not possible, and the relationship has broken down irretrievably, then you should seek legal advice as early as possible.

To get a divorce in England and Wales, you must have been married for more than a year and must be able to show that the relationship has irretrievably broken down for one of the following reasons:-

You spouse has committed adultery
Your spouse has behaved in such a way that you can not reasonably be expected to live together
You have been separated for two years and your spouse agrees to the divorce
You have been separated for five years
Your spouse has deserted you for more than 2 years

Obtaining a divorce normally takes at least 12 weeks.
